Checkpoint Charlie

Sightseeing: Checkpoint Charlie Berlin | guidable

Checkpoint Charlie was a famous border crossing during the division of Berlin, located near Potsdamer Platz. It was the only crossing point for foreigners and diplomats that allowed access to the Soviet sector of West Berlin. The checkpoint was established in 1961 and was one of the most monitored and secure places during the division of Berlin. Checkpoint Charlie was also the scene of numerous events during the Cold War, including the infamous tank standoff in 1961, when Soviet and American tanks faced off. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Checkpoint Charlie was dismantled and the border crossing was no longer needed. Today, Checkpoint Charlie is a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the history of the division of Berlin and the Cold War. There is also a museum at Checkpoint Charlie that documents the history of the site and the Cold War.
